Biography
People’s Artist Bùi Trần Tuệ Minh (24th February 1938 - 24th February 2018) was a Vietnamese actress, radio presenter, screenwriter and director. Renowned for her sweet looks and a distinctively refined Hanoian accent, she started working for Vietnam Feature Film Studio in 1962 and almost exclusively starred in supporting roles, often portraying tormented and neurotic characters driven to tragic ends. One of her few lead roles was as Hương in “Truyện vợ chồng anh Lực”(1972) which earned her a Best Actress award at 1973 Vietnam Film Festival. On stage, she enjoyed greater acclaim and a wider variety of roles; she was best known for her role as Phượng in Nguyễn Khải’s play “Cách mạng”.
After her retirement in 1992, Tuệ Minh regularly hosted children’s radio shows and midnight storytellings for VOV broadcast; she also occasionally wrote and directed a series of video films, as well as lectured at Hanoi National Academy of Theatre and Performing Arts. The actress passed away in a nursing home on her 80th birthday, having been paralysed by a stroke the previous year. She was survived by two daughters through her first marriage with director Huy Vân.
