The Twelve

The respected school principal Frie Palmers is on trial for a double murder– of her best friend Brechtje 18 years ago and recently of her own daughter Rose. Palmers pleads not guilty. Twelve ordinary citizens will be drawn as a people's jury in the process and will have to decide her fate. But not everyone is equally eager to participate in what promises to be a fierce process.

For years police officer Donald Vantomme has failed in his investigation into the murder of Brechtje Vindevogel. His colleague Eliane Pascual did not come to the case until later and steered the investigation in the right direction. The jurors try to combine their own lives with the trial. The moral Joeri is faced with a dilemma in his construction company, and Delphine has problems with her dominant husband.

With a convincing explanation, agent Eliane Pascual explains in court how she was able to arrest Frie Palmers for the murder of her best friend Brechtje and her daughter Rose. In the public jury, Holly Ceusters is viewed obliquely by Carl because she lied about her last name. Holly also seems to be rather casual with men. And jury member Joeri does not seem to mind.

Marc Vindevogel, father of victim Brechtje, testifies in court what he believed was the role of the ranchers in Brechtje's death. He appears to have a love-hate relationship with accused Frie Palmers. Jury member Carl Destoop is distracted from the trial by his teenage daughter Juliette who is behaving rebelliously. Joeri also has a lot on his mind. Holly tries to be honest with him and the truth hurts.

Stefaan testifies as a crown witness about the death of his former sweetheart Brechtje and his daughter Rose. The defense tries to undermine his alibi. The case gets into the heads of the jurors. Arnold is increasingly starting to think that the whole world is fucked up. Delphine finds it difficult to keep her attention, because her home situation is not improving. Noël is aware of this and speaks about it with someone from the press in exchange for cash.

Veeboer Vanneste testifies about the murder of Brechtje, but the defense is looking for another suspect– perhaps a reason for the judge to stop the process. The jury is given a weekend break. Delphine's dominant husband promises to be more considerate, but hits her in a way she didn't expect. Noël offers her a helping hand by hiring Carl's daughter as a babysitter. In the meantime, Joeri tries to calm his problems of conscience, but gets himself in trouble.

Anton and Julie are interrogated by the chairman. Julie claims she accidentally pushed Marianne down the stairs. Anton declares to have left home after a quarrel and not to have seen Marianne since. Anton, meanwhile, has a hard time with the strategy of his lawyer Frank - who wants him to go against his daughter's statement.

Investigating judge, blood spatter analyst and medical doctor show that Marianne was probably knocked down in the living room, thrown down the cellar stairs by two people, and then suffocated. Claire questions the prosecutor's office and questions their evidence, while Frank launches a defense strategy that surprises both the opposing defense and the jury. Meanwhile, those around Kobe seem convinced of his guilt, to Nico's dismay. And Catherine gets to know the charming jury member Jacob.

Dennis explains at the trial what he believes was Anton's motive, and Romy is pressured by her lawyers to portray Julie in a bad light during her questioning. Dennis and Romy are questioned by the defense lawyers and are found not to have been completely honest. Meanwhile, Kobe is being bullied harder and harder, Esther's painkillers are harder than expected, and Jacob doesn't understand why Catherine is avoiding him. He continues to seek contact in vain.

Pix, Marianne's accountant, is questioned as a witness. However, serious questions arise about his statement and he is dealt with harshly by Frank. Anneke, Pix's wife, general practitioner and best friend of Marianne, comes to testify about a strange incident a few months before the murder. Meanwhile, Simon and Maya get to know each other better, Catherine tells Vanessa what happened between her and Jacob, and Murad appears to be carrying a dark secret from the past.

The court psychiatrist outlines the psychological profiles of Anton and Julie and the disturbing dynamics within the family. Meanwhile, a new element emerges in the investigation and Claire realizes that Julie has not always been honest about everything. At the trial, serious questions arise about Dennis' role as Julie's coach. At home, Murad realizes that things cannot continue like this with Loubna, Simon is finding it increasingly difficult to care for Esther and Nico increasingly doubts Kobe.

The investigating judge presents the reconstructions to the jury and shows several contradictions in the statements of Anton and Julie. Meanwhile, Claire distances herself more and more from Julie, until she suddenly makes a statement that surprises everyone. As things become increasingly difficult at Simon's home, he grows closer to Maya. Jacob discovers that Catherine told Vanessa what happened between them, and Nico confesses to Marcus what she discovered.
