In an ancient kingdom, a vicious warlord is on the hunt for a magical sword. Forced to escape his soldiers, the young girl who guards the sword is hunted until she receives some unexpected help from a pair of odd strangers.

Shāng Bù Huàn has no intention of following the sly Lǐn Xuě Yā's advice and helping in the quest to protect the mystical Tiān Xing Jiàn sword, but when finds himself targeted by the evil sect that is trying to take it, he finds he might not have a choice.

To defeat the villainous Miè Tiān Hái, Dān Fěi and her party will need to get through an army of bloodthirsty undead. The safest way to do this would be to recruit the help of a necromancer, but the person that Lǐn Xuě Yā has in mind makes the others very nervous, for a good reason...

After an attempt to recruit the otherworldly Night's Lament, the group moves to rendezvous with the owner of the Soul Echo Flute. What they find in his place spells big trouble for the enigmatic Guǐ Niǎo...

After the group returns to their inn, they talk about confronting the Screaming Phoenix Killer. Cán Yún is determined to fight Wú Shēng in a duel the next morning, because he considers himself expendable and because, if he wins, then he would make a name for himself. Xíng Hài offers her help in the form of spells. Guǐ Niǎo, however, feels that confrontation should only be used as a last resort. Bù Huàn gets tired of the talk and decides to head off on his own. He goes to the Devilwood Flower Garden himself and asks Wú Shēng to hand over the Soul Echo Flute. Wú Shēng refuses and they prepare to battle, but Guǐ Niǎo diffuses the situation and asks Wú Shēng the favor of becoming the performer of the Soul Echo Flute; in exchange, Guǐ Niǎo propositions Wú Shēng his head once they have reached the summit of the Demon Spine Mountains. Wú Shēng agrees. Meanwhile, Miè Tiān Hái suspects that Guǐ Niǎo's group will head to him.

Bù Huàn is worried that the group cannot work together, as everyone is suspicious of each other. However, he still accompanies them as they ride a boat to the Demon Spine Mountains. Upon arrival to shore, the group encounters the Xuán Guǐ Zōng, led by Liè Mèi and Diāo Mìng. Cán Yún is motivated by Wú Shēng to attack and takes care of the "cannon fodder," while Hài and Yún Xiāo work together to raise the dead created by Cán Yún. Wú Shēng finally attacks after all the soldiers have been taken care of, killing Liè Mèi. Suddenly, Miè Tiān Hái shows up.

The Sorcerous Sword Index is a collection of 35 magical swords wielding otherworldly powers, many of which have the potential to bring ruin to the human realm. Shang Bu Huan has fled his homeland of Xi You with the index in order to keep it from falling into the wrong hands... but trouble has a way of finding him.

The Princess of Cruelty Xie Yingluo has managed to make off with a pair of blades from the Sorcerous Sword Index, and now she plots to use them and her mastery over poison to seize the rest from Shang Bu Huan.

Shang Bu Huan is stricken by the Princess of Cruelty's poison, leaving him and Lang Wu Yao on the run. Between the toxic temptress' attack and the and the ruthless pursuit of magistrate Xiao Kuang Juan, their quest to protect the Sorcerous Sword Index might be impossible... without some help.

Lin Xue Ya and Shang Bu Huan are reunited, while the fugitive hunter Xiao Kuáng Juan approaches the Princess of Cruelty with an offer she can't refuse.

With his health recovered, Shang Bu Huan takes a stand against the poisonous Xie Yīngluo and the treacherous Xiao Kuang Juan.
