Blue Heelers was one of Australia's longest running weekly television drama series. Blue Heelers is a police drama series set in the fictional country town of Mount Thomas. Under the watchful eye of Tom Croydon (John Wood), the men and women of Mount Thomas Police Station fight crime, resolve disputes and tackle the social issues of the day. We watch their successes and their failures and learn to grow with them and their loved ones as the heart of the series develops.

""Keep your hand's off him and we'll be friends"" The new constable Maggie Doyle arrives in Mt. Thomas. She is faced with not only rampant chauvinism but the fact that she is stationed with ex-boyfriend Constable Wayne Patterson who has recently moved there with his wife Roz. Local girl Sally-Anne is raped by her boyfriend Bruce McLaren. She makes a formal complaint but when Bruce pressures her she attempts to withdraw it. When Sally-Anne discovers that this isn't possible she tries to commit suicide. Maggie and Nick find her and revive her. Maggie and Wayne go to speak to farmer Mick Doherty about his parking fines. When his dog breaks it's chains Maggie shoots her. Mick then starts firing at them. Tom is forced to go out and have a ""yarn"" with Mick and with the help of PJ gets Mick a new dog.

""Madam, this is not the local beauty palour, its the police station"" Local farmer, Bob Crowley, is due to have his harvester repossessed. When Nick and Maggie escort the repo agent, Mr. Miller, to the farm arrive it's been stolen. There is lots of finger pointing. Later that day Miller and his mates beat up Crowley. Maggie has a word to Bob's daughter Grace. Turns out that Grace and her boyfriend had ""hidden"" the harvester so that her father could collect the insurance so he wouldn't lose the farm. Needless-to-say she is charged. Meanwhile local handyman, David Tufnel is found dead. Wayne learns the hard way that whoever signs the body over to the morgue has to assist with the autopsy. On the personal front, Roz is trying to establish a beauty parlour at the watch-keepers house. Wayne doesn't get around to asking Tom for permission and when women start ringing the station for facials Roz is found out. Tom spits the dummy and closes her down before she really starts.

""But if I had locked him up he would still be alive"" Maggie meets local school teacher Brian Shields and his wife. Shields is very anti-guns having been to Vietnam. He gets into a minor prang with some city duck-shooters and goes berserk and shoots a gun in the street. Tom agrees to let him go if he promises to stay out of trouble. PJ writes shields off as a wacko but Maggie feels there is something more to it. When Shields is found dead the next day, the finger is pointed at the duck-shooters. When pressed by PJ the wife admits that her husband committed suicide as he had terminal cancer using a gun to highlight the danger of guns. PJ is not convinced but soon the media take over and join the wife's side. Finally Maggie gets some circumstantial evidence that the wife killed her husband but it's too late as she is now the media darling and they could never make it stick. Meanwhile Roz has brought herself a car to start a mobile salon and cannot meet her obligations to clean the station

Wayne are Roz are celebrating her new business when the phone rings — there has been a burglary at the local antique store, one of a spate of local break-ins. Whilst PJ is off with a ""girlfriend,"" Wayne is forced to stand guard all nite. Meanwhile Maggie and Nick arrest ""Blackjack"" Eagan, a ex-copper and hero of PJ's. It turns out Eagan is hanging round Mt. Thomas to avoid some crims he had put away who are due to be released. Tom gets Nick to drop the charges so that Eagan will move on. Roz sees a pair of earrings the next day at a clients which is a match for stolen goods from an earlier burglary. It doesn't help the client's husband is an ex-crim. PJ makes Roz sign a formal statement, and as a result of telling police information she learned on the job, her business suffers. Bush fires are ringing the township of Mount Thomas and Maggie and Wayne are out evacuating farm houses in the path of the inferno, but this routine job suddenly turns dangerous when they are confronted by a masked man brandishing a shotgun. Maggie and Wayne overcome the offender and take him into custody. Back at the station he is quickly identified as one of three bandits who held up St. David's bank the previous day. The prisoner proves to be uncooperative. He refuses to give his name or those of his accomplices and in an unguarded moment, he swallows a handful of thumbtacks. Although Mt. Thomas Hospital is presently under renovations, there is still a skeleton staff there and the bandit is rushed into emergency surgery under the care of Dr. Zoe Hamilton. Tom sends Adam to ""have a few words"" with his mate and warn him to stay off the grog - especially at the footy club fund-raising function tonight. The function features Justin de Carlo, an illusionist and stage hypnotist. All the Heelers are there, and some of them even find themselves up on stage as volunteers, as does Wazza. But when Justin suggests that his hypnotised volunteers go and kiss the person they fancy the most in the room, the whole town is astounded when Wazza heads straight for Adam and kisses him full on the lips! Although Tom is inclined to play down the situation the following morning, believing the less fuss the sooner it will be forgotten, Wazza demands police action, convinced that he has been tricked and defamed.

A new resident, Bob Barker, comes in to the station to report a burglary. This seems normal enough until Maggie and PJ realise that Bob has had, not his contents, but his whole house stolen. They go out to investigate the property which Bob claims he hasn't seen for five years (since his aunt left it to him in her will) and find only the stumps on which the house sat. The Heelers tell Bob and his daughter Pippa that they will chase up the matter but it could be difficult, considering the theft could have occurred any time over the past five years. Financially strapped, Bob wonders where he can now spend the night. Tom organises for him to work a shift at the Imperial in return for a room. PJ and Maggie get on the trail of the missing house but find every lead dead. The only local house moving company in town hasn't done that sort of business for years. The other avenues the Heelers pursue, such as crooks selling off the parts for money, are equally fruitless.

But then a woman goes missing and Tony starts to think that Nick is having an affair with her. Maybe Tony will get a nice, juicy article out of all of this... with Nick as the subject!

Mark is running the station, with Tom suspended, and the new Acting Sergeant Lindy Schroder is intriguing everyone - particularly Joss. Nick is in town to help PJ investigate the case during which time they have learnt that Tarni survived Tom's attempt on her life, and claims Tom then killed Ryan and fled. Tom, however, claims, he never found Tarni, and he was shot at as he left the premises after tying Ryan up. However, Ryan's death does seem to be the work of one of them. While Joss and Jonesy are stuck investigating the arson of a set of bonsai trees, Amy investigates a video store robbery using the same rifle as the one that killed Ryan. When it leads to a friend of Ryan's and Tarni's, it seems to prove that they were involved in Ryan's death but the coroner, and lead investigator Greta Conroy, think otherwise, and Tom is formerly charged with murder.

Falcon-Price convinces Alex to have Tom brought before the Medical Officer and, when Alex agrees, Falcon-Price uses this as ammunition to get Tom out of the force; but gets it blown up back in his face. Meanwhile, Jonesy and Amy are have difficulty finding their suspect and Kelly's jealousy is showing when she tries to find some negative information about Joss's new girlfriend.
