""Keep your hand's off him and we'll be friends"" The new constable Maggie Doyle arrives in Mt. Thomas. She is faced with not only rampant chauvinism but the fact that she is stationed with ex-boyfriend Constable Wayne Patterson who has recently moved there with his wife Roz. Local girl Sally-Anne is raped by her boyfriend Bruce McLaren. She makes a formal complaint but when Bruce pressures her she attempts to withdraw it. When Sally-Anne discovers that this isn't possible she tries to commit suicide. Maggie and Nick find her and revive her. Maggie and Wayne go to speak to farmer Mick Doherty about his parking fines. When his dog breaks it's chains Maggie shoots her. Mick then starts firing at them. Tom is forced to go out and have a ""yarn"" with Mick and with the help of PJ gets Mick a new dog.

""Madam, this is not the local beauty palour, its the police station"" Local farmer, Bob Crowley, is due to have his harvester repossessed. When Nick and Maggie escort the repo agent, Mr. Miller, to the farm arrive it's been stolen. There is lots of finger pointing. Later that day Miller and his mates beat up Crowley. Maggie has a word to Bob's daughter Grace. Turns out that Grace and her boyfriend had ""hidden"" the harvester so that her father could collect the insurance so he wouldn't lose the farm. Needless-to-say she is charged. Meanwhile local handyman, David Tufnel is found dead. Wayne learns the hard way that whoever signs the body over to the morgue has to assist with the autopsy. On the personal front, Roz is trying to establish a beauty parlour at the watch-keepers house. Wayne doesn't get around to asking Tom for permission and when women start ringing the station for facials Roz is found out. Tom spits the dummy and closes her down before she really starts.

""But if I had locked him up he would still be alive"" Maggie meets local school teacher Brian Shields and his wife. Shields is very anti-guns having been to Vietnam. He gets into a minor prang with some city duck-shooters and goes berserk and shoots a gun in the street. Tom agrees to let him go if he promises to stay out of trouble. PJ writes shields off as a wacko but Maggie feels there is something more to it. When Shields is found dead the next day, the finger is pointed at the duck-shooters. When pressed by PJ the wife admits that her husband committed suicide as he had terminal cancer using a gun to highlight the danger of guns. PJ is not convinced but soon the media take over and join the wife's side. Finally Maggie gets some circumstantial evidence that the wife killed her husband but it's too late as she is now the media darling and they could never make it stick. Meanwhile Roz has brought herself a car to start a mobile salon and cannot meet her obligations to clean the station

""Stand aside, Maggie on the case - what you got here Sherlock!"" Wayne are Roz are celebrating her new business when the phone rings — there has been a burglary at the local antique store, one of a spate of local break-ins. Whilst PJ is off with a ""girlfriend,"" Wayne is forced to stand guard all nite. Meanwhile Maggie and Nick arrest ""Blackjack"" Eagan, a ex-copper and hero of PJ's. It turns out Eagan is hanging round Mt. Thomas to avoid some crims he had put away who are due to be released. Tom gets Nick to drop the charges so that Eagan will move on. Roz sees a pair of earrings the next day at a clients which is a match for stolen goods from an earlier burglary. It doesn't help the client's husband is an ex-crim. PJ makes Roz sign a formal statement, and as a result of telling police information she learned on the job, her business suffers. PJ gets the crim to finger the fence he brought the jewellery from, a travelling jewellery salesman and ""close"" friend of Chris. With the help of E

All is going well until he has a catering mix up - it appears that he has employed two caterers and both women are not to pleased when they find out that each other has been hired. Nick and Maggie are roster on to patrol the highway and are on the out look for speeding motorists. The skull turns up aka Sergeant Harrison is the Boss replacement. He is not impressed with Maggie and Nick's results on booking drivers and sets about to rectify this situation immediately much to the displeasure of Maggie and Nick. The Skull takes Maggie out on a tour of inspection of Mount Thomas. While out with the Skull, PJ and Wayne witness the Skull putting Maggie through the correct procedure of ticketing much to the amusement of Wayne and PJ. PJ interviews the man and asks him what makes him confess now. Roz and Wayne are assigned to look after a young girl. A man comes into the station claiming to be the girls father, the young girl Sally identifies him as her father, but Tom requires proof and the man refuses to identify himself. Nick clocks Roz driving at 19kms over the limit and issues her with a speeding ticket. She asks Wayne if he could have a word to Nick, otherwise Roz will lose her license and will be unable to do her mobile hairdressing business. A man comes into the station claiming to be the girls father, the young girl Sally identifies him as her father, but Tom requires proof and the man refuses to identify himself. Mrs Haughton turns up at the station and PJ tells her that her husband had made a full confession to the murder. She informs PJ that is not pos

A boy at a local school has severely assaulted one of his classmates. After questioning at the station, the boy is charged and sent home. The next morning, the police are called to a tragic case of domestic violence, a case that forces Rose to confront her past when she makes a very wrong assumption.

Bush fires are ringing the township of Mount Thomas and Maggie and Wayne are out evacuating farm houses in the path of the inferno, but this routine job suddenly turns dangerous when they are confronted by a masked man brandishing a shotgun. A siege has developed at the Mt. Thomas hospital. While the armed and desperate Nerida Davidson and Jason Bennett hold Maggie and Wayne on the inside, the rest of the Heelers lay in wait on the outside of the building. Meanwhile, bushfires ring the township making outside help a forlorn hope. The bandits' objective is to get their compatriot, Matt, out of the hospital and away, but this is not made any easier by his gradually worsening medical condition. When captured, Matt swallowed a handful of map pins in order to get to the hospital, a soft target from which he could be more easily rescued. The situation is further complicated by the presence of mother-to-be Augusta Torrini and her emotional, hot-blooded husband, Sergio. Panic sweeps Mt. Thomas when an outbreak of an animal disease begins to kill humans. When Maggie suddenly collapses, PJ is desperate not to let the disease, which has already claimed two lives, take his beloved Maggie.

The words Japanese Encephalitis strike fear into the heart of PJ. It's fatal, there's no cure, and it seems to be the cause of Maggie's illness. But PJ won't give up. Dash discovers that her penchant for gossip may very well get her, and other people into hot water when she and Adam, overhear the Shire President, Roger Payne, having lunch with a woman who is definitely not his wife. While out on a surveillance operation to catch an extortionist who's been threatening to blow up a restaurant, the pair, bored with three days of sitting in the car with nothing to do except listen, finally hear something interesting. Unfortunately, while Adam and Dash are preoccupied, the real extortionists manage to get away, much to PJ's chagrin. PJ appeals to Tom to hold the investigation over longer, but the matter is out of Tom's hands-the surveillance equipment and manpower belong to another unit and he can't retain them without very good reason. It's raining cats and dogs in Mount Thomas and Nick and Adam are overdue back from patrol. When they arrive they are drenched through and their uniforms are in tatters. The other Heelers have no idea of the extent of their trauma until Tom asks them to explain themselves and Adam bursts into tears. While Dash attempts to draw the story out of Adam, Nick disappears to change his uniform. However, shock has taken over and he withdraws into himself, making it difficult to find out the true story. Adam explains that it all began when they attempted to rescue a young girl from a flooded stormwater drain. While Nick held onto her and attempted to stop her from being dragged away, he sent Adam for help. However Adam soon found himself in the middle of a crisis of his own involving the girl's sister and wasn't able to get back in time. Piecing the story together, the Heelers discover that exhaustion wore Nick down and he eventually let go of the girl. Now back in the station, guilt and anger l

Nick is astonished to discover that the shooter of a young protester at the opening of the duck season is none other than his sometime admirer, Dr Zoe Hamilton. She, of course, claims it was an accident, explaining that the chief protester grabbed her gun just as she was aiming at a duck. Adam gets an admirer of his own when he assists the pretty eighteen year old daughter of one of the duck shooters after she is injured in the melee. This is Stacey Norse, whose father Ken accuses the chief protester, Matthew Prentice, of stealing one of his ducks. Troubles escalate when Ken Norse falls seriously ill while eating his specially prepared duck lunch at the Imperial Hotel. When Zoe suspects poisoning, the Heelers wonder if it might have been Matthew Prentice, but when blood tests show that Norse is actually suffering from a severe case of lead poisoning, they must rethink the case. Mt. Thomas station is full of secrets. Maggie and PJ have come back from holidays deeply in love but determined that no one, especially Tom, will find out about their new relationship. Meanwhile, Nick and Adam have intercepted Dash's Confirmation Certificate as a fully-fledged constable in order to have it framed for a special presentation, and Tom and Chris are conspiring to organise a surprise celebration for Dash's 20th birthday. Into this web of intrigue comes a very distressed Elly Winslow, asking for police protection because her ex-husband, Danny Hobson, has just been released from prison in Queensland where he was serving time for sexually molesting his own son, and she is terrified that he will come looking for them.

Dash is somewhere out there in a bus with a group of school children, their teacher and an armed gunman, and the Heelers are feeling especially bad about it because they led Dash to believe that they've forgotten her birthday. When the bus is found abandoned, the Heelers must decipher both true and false clues in order to find the missing children.

Adam's mate, Wazza Tully, is in trouble; Mandy Barnes wants him charged with sexual assault after an incident at the Imperial where a drunken Wazza tried to grabs her breasts. Tom sends Adam to ""have a few words"" with his mate and warn him to stay off the grog - especially at the footy club fund-raising function tonight. The function features Justin de Carlo, an illusionist and stage hypnotist. All the Heelers are there, and some of them even find themselves up on stage as volunteers, as does Wazza. But when Justin suggests that his hypnotised volunteers go and kiss the person they fancy the most in the room, the whole town is astounded when Wazza heads straight for Adam and kisses him full on the lips! Although Tom is inclined to play down the situation the following morning, believing the less fuss the sooner it will be forgotten, Wazza demands police action, convinced that he has been tricked and defamed.

A new resident, Bob Barker, comes in to the station to report a burglary. This seems normal enough until Maggie and PJ realise that Bob has had, not his contents, but his whole house stolen. They go out to investigate the property which Bob claims he hasn't seen for five years (since his aunt left it to him in her will) and find only the stumps on which the house sat. The Heelers tell Bob and his daughter Pippa that they will chase up the matter but it could be difficult, considering the theft could have occurred any time over the past five years. Financially strapped, Bob wonders where he can now spend the night. Tom organises for him to work a shift at the Imperial in return for a room. PJ and Maggie get on the trail of the missing house but find every lead dead. The only local house moving company in town hasn't done that sort of business for years. The other avenues the Heelers pursue, such as crooks selling off the parts for money, are equally fruitless.

When a review team arrives in Mt. Thomas to decide if the station should be down-graded, the Heelers are thrown into a panic. It doesn't help matters that Nick is the subject of a ""Day in the Life Of"" by Tony Timms, and is doing his best to show that the life of a cop is a dull one. But then a woman goes missing and Tony starts to think that Nick is having an affair with her. Maybe Tony will get a nice, juicy article out of all of this... with Nick as the subject!

When a young man, Dean Hartley, is involved in an accident following a high speed car chase secrets unravelled. Dean admits to driving the vehicle immediately after the accident but later retracts the statement. PJ had taped the conversation and brings the recorder out to show Dean, but when he pushes the play button he finds that the tape is missing. PJ begins to investigate the tape theft but when he stumbles onto the true identity of Dean's natural mother he finds a secret much more shocking.

Adam has left the force, and Mt. Thomas, and Probationary Constable Jack Lawson has barely arrived in Mt. Thomas before he is in trouble with the police. Jack's misdemeanours are small ones and quickly forgiven as his unassuming charm disarms Maggie and Dash. Even Tom can't find fault with the new recruit, whose initiative and enthusiasm for menial tasks prove an immediate asset. But Jack's sunny welcome to Mt. Thomas is clouded by a report of sexual assault at the local retirement home. This one requires a woman's touch. Maggie and Dash visit the home to discover the alleged victim is in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. She claims her assailant is the devil. Tom discovers his daughter is pregnant when she becomes the victim of a hit and run. The accident leaves her unconscious and internally injured and Tom is faced with a terrible dilemma. Did one of them steal the belt in an effort to protect their history? A pyrotechnics accident leaves one old wrestler badly burnt and Meg leans on Jonesy for support. Jonesy is disbelieving as evidence mounts against his old girlfriend. Would she risk someone's life to get her own way? Tess thinks so. Jo's new romance is firing up with her fencing tutor - world class athlete, silver medal winner and sports journalist Guy Merrin and the Heelers are impressed. PJ and Jo are called when a 17 year old athlete named Callum Stiles collapses on the track and dies. Jo finds syringes in his bag. His mother tells them Callum was under a lot of stress over winning the games but she wouldn't have given him drugs, she was once an athlete in a scandal herself. Jonesy suspects a drug called EPO which increases oxygen flow and might not be detected in regular drug tests. Guy soon comes to the station looking for information after he heard a rumour that drugs were involved. Tom and PJ are worried Jo's personal life is getting in the way, but she is also intrigued as to these ""rumours"". Neither Assistant Coach Dan Reed or runner Fiona Bartram believe that Callum was using drugs, and Dan is publicly against them. Callum's world class coach Frank Jarvis is also known to have spoke out against drugs,

Chris has finaly pulled through and got the first Mount Thomas Blues Festival up and running. There are thousands of tourists in town but the predictions are for heavy rain. The festival may be ruined and Chris has been pushing her hardest for months to get this thing going. Jo is not excited at the prospect of Blues, but Jonesy and Tess certainly are. Among the singers are legends Charlie Bell and Butch Jordan who was Tess's favourite singer as a child. Jo is even more angry when Ben injures himself at basketball and she must take over his shift, missing out on her weekend off. Farmer Roy Haiseman begins firing at a trespasser whom Jonesy soon discovers is Butch Jordan himself. One of only two roads to the festival goes through Roy's property and Roy is against the idea. Or, as Tom puts it, Roy is against the idea that Chris beat him in the council election. There is a total fire ban. A frustrated PJ is seduced by Jo one night, while - in the other room - Ben gets progressively drunker. Later, as Jo and PJ lie awake, they smell smoke and realise the house is on fire. After rescuing Ben, they flee. While they recover at the hospital, Jonesy arrives and tells them that all their belongings are destroyed. Ben claims an intruder knocked him out, so an arson squad is called. Meanwhile, Tess and Jonesy fight over her new marriage to Dr. Carmichael. At the remains of their house, PJ finds a photo frame with Maggie in it, and pockets it but doesn't tell Jo. The arson squad discovers that it wasn't arson but a single candelabra - exactly what Ben had going. Another fire has broken out, possibly started from the fire at PJ's The 'hero' who entered PJ's house after the fire, Wayne Bayliss, is considered a suspect, particularly when a driptorch and a scrapbook of news articles on fires is found at his home. Amongst those searching, Tess and PJ must admit their true feelings for Jonesy and Jo respectively. But even as the flames die down, there is trouble when Ben - who realises he may have caused the entire bushfire - promises that he has stopped drinking, even though it may not be true.

Sabu, the family dog of Tom's family is accused of killing livestock. Tess takes the hard line impounding the dog. As per usual Jonesy questions Tess' stance, resulting in another D & M between the lovestruck, but unattainable pair. Tess revelas that as a child she had a dog...for merely a few weeks. From all magazine accounts Jonesy fronts Tess late one night in the station a gorgeous border collie pup in his arms.

Ben, out on patrol, pulls over Inspector Falcon-Price'ss wife. The media find out about the incident and the Inspector is not impressed. Tom has to deal with Compo Hayes who smashed into Tom's car. Tess's husband gets offered a job in Melbourne, and decides to take it. The road patrol uncovers a grisly homicide.

JO once again becomes involved with Sam Baxter, a troubled teen last seen in Those That Trespass.

Sam, safely ensconced in Jo's house and attending school regulary; well at least for the last few days, joins the school netball team. Trouble begins to brew when parents become upset about team plaements. The coach is bashed and the star player a vitim of a hit and run. During a match Sam deliberately trips another player who ends up with a broken nose. Jo insists Sam apologise, whish she does, but she also gets kicked off the team. Grace asks Sam to stay with her and Tom, she accepts. JO finds out through Tom, that PJ's opinion was asked. Jo fronts PJ, and they part on bad terms.

When PJ's old nemesis Luke Darcy (see season 4's ""The Civil Dead"") is freed from jail, he returns to Mount Thomas and PJ instantly believes he is bad news. After a bashing, and then the rape of Luke's own grandmother, the evidence points elswhere but PJ's suspicions - and the suspicions of Luke's cousin - lead him to force his anger onto Luke. Meanwhile, Susie and Ben - who have each spent months in therapy - talk about their issue and Susie begins to think Ben is ignoring it, rather than confronting his feelings about killing her husband. After Luke attempts to rape and kill Jo, PJ angrily heads to his house. When the others arrive they find Luke dead with an axe in the head - and PJ standing over him...

PJ refuses to explain how he came to be standing over the dead body of Luke Darcy, forcing the Homicide Squad to arrest him for murder. The other Heelers must prove his innocence and find the real killer. Meanwhile the Heelers get a surprise when Jo finds out that she has been promoted to Senior Constable, when her strips and badge come in the mail. And they also find out that Ditch is the father of Kayla's baby.

Rivalry runs rampant between Chris and her opponent in the lead up to council elections. The community is split over a decision to ban men from the pools for Muslim women-only swimming sessions.

Ben faces a dilemma when he and his fiancée Marissa search for two homeless kids - the children of an itinerant drifter who collapsed during a pub brawl. Ben has already begun to suspect that he has met his match in selfless self-sacrifice in Marissa, but relations are strained when Ben realises that Marissa is hiding the kids. While most things work out well, Ben and Marissa soon realise that they don't have the trust to make their marriage work, and decide to call it off.

When Susie finds herself escorting a pet alpaca to a funeral, she really begins to understand something about country policing. Unfortunately the recently acquired alpaca is the heir to a fortune, and suddenly all sorts of contenders emerge to make counter claims.

Ben and Susie face the inquest into Brad's death. What is hoped to be a mere formality quickly becomes complicated when a witness makes damning claims against them both - including accusations that Ben and Susie were having a passionate affair.

It has been eight weeks since Tom pushed Tarni underwater, and he is now the subject of a possible murder investigation. Mark is running the station, with Tom suspended, and the new Acting Sergeant Lindy Schroder is intriguing everyone - particularly Joss. Nick is in town to help PJ investigate the case during which time they have learnt that Tarni survived Tom's attempt on her life, and claims Tom then killed Ryan and fled. Tom, however, claims, he never found Tarni, and he was shot at as he left the premises after tying Ryan up. However, Ryan's death does seem to be the work of one of them. While Joss and Jonesy are stuck investigating the arson of a set of bonsai trees, Amy investigates a video store robbery using the same rifle as the one that killed Ryan. When it leads to a friend of Ryan's and Tarni's, it seems to prove that they were involved in Ryan's death but the coroner, and lead investigator Greta Conroy, think otherwise, and Tom is formerly charged with murder.

Tom has been formerly charged with murder, and he seems unwilling to even help PJ and Nick find the truth, even though they also believe that Tarni Baxter has something that she's hiding. But when Kelly is kidnapped, they must attempt to convince Tom to help them rescue her and in doing so, prove his innocence. Meanwhile, Amy attempts to get rid of a case that is annoying her by passing it on to anyone who will take it; and Joss learns more about Lindy Schroder, who was given the position at the station because she is a friend of Mark's.

The Heelers settle into an unusual routine when Tom returns to the station and reclaims his position as Boss. While some are more willing than others to accept it, Lindy discovers that Tom is not going to make things easy for her. As it is, Tom doesn't think much of Mark, who isn't the type of cop he is interested in, and he makes things even harder for the new cop in town. While Lindy finds her job in jeopardy, PJ, Amy, Joss and Kelly find themselves investigating bizarre cases - this is no normal week in Mt. Thomas.

After the second SIDS related death in as many weeks occurs, PJ and Amy grow suspicious and investigate, only to find the town turning against them in its grief. Investigating a problem at the Imperial, Kelly is amused when Chris informs her that Joss has moved out to live with friends, and she forwards his mother's ""care packages"" to the station. Meanwhile Jonesy and Susie are held hostage and are saved by Senior Constable Alex Kirby - Lindy's replacement, and an old friend of Jonesy's.

After a home invasion strikes Mt. Thomas, PJ, Amy and Tom comfort the grieving O'Keefe family. What they don't expect is to learn that the father, Danny, has gangster connections and this isn't going down well with Tom's current attitude. And Susie is forced to bond with Alex, who is enjoying it immensely, when Jonesy is involved in a car chase with tragic results.

Raynor and Kirby investigate a reportedly missing girl that has everything she could ever want. But it seems she has been corresponding with an older male, and he may be ther eason behind her disappearance. Joss and Kelly also try to restart the bluelight basketball team. Kelly discovers one boy in the team had been dealing drugs. Joss gets the team interested in soccer and decides to set up a soccer club. He invites his brother to help. Toni then tries to seduce kelly. Tom also decides it is time to get something on Danny O'Keefe and instructs them to haul him in over anything. Kelly does and Tom is delighted. They can't get anything on him. PJ returns from a conference then Tom says he's going out. PJ needs to go again and tells Amy something more important has come up. PJ finds Tom at the soccer club next to Mr O'Keefe's car which has a broken window. PJ calms the storm then asks if Mr O'Keefe wants to press charges. PJ and Tom convince him not to.

Tom, who is not well and is trying to hide it from his colleagues, meets an old friend who has been caught shoplifting and discovers that he was trying to please his ten-year-old daughter who is dying from leukaemia. Tom continues to refuse to see a doctor. Alex is struggling with the idea of being a father, and is further discouraged when his son, Rory, goes missing and is feared kidnapped by gunmen who've been taking shots at uniformed police officers. Finally, the Heelers find that the gunman was taking revenge on the police for the death of his son.

The Heelers are concerned about Tom's health and, despite Amy's nagging, Tom is still very reluctant to see a doctor and denies claims that he is unwell. In the midst of this, Tom becomes personally involved in the case of a young boy who is being bullied and tormented by his peers; this forces Tom to reminisce about his troubles as a child. Matt helps an old colleague of Tom's when he arrives at the station seeking help with an old case.

Tom's health is further declining and he finally gives in to Amy's persistence and opens up to her. Jonesy and Alex become mixed up in a mysterious cult after they find a baby's remains in a firepit in the national park. Alex continues to struggle with the idea of fatherhood and is further discouraged when he makes a mistake that lands Rory in hospital. An elderly man is arrested for shoplifting various items which he intends to give to his girlfriend.

Tom secretly goes to Melbourne to receive treatment for his cancer, confiding only in Amy. Kelly, becoming uneasy about Tom's disappearance, consults Amy who ensures her Tom is out innocently fishing. Following Tom's disappearance, Inspector Falcon-Price gleefully takes over the operation of the station and also becomes suspicious about Tom's whereabouts, finally deciding to question Kelly. Amy begins to get frustrated when the Inspector does his utmost best to hinder her case of a brutal home invasion and assault. When hers and the Inspector's opinions begin to differ, Amy finds herself taken off the case. Alex, in a bid to keep Rory hidden from the Inspector, sends him out on the road with Susie and is terrified when he again goes missing.

Joss comes up with yet another money-making scheme and catches the gambling bug when a pickpocket victim he and Kelly help gives him a winning tip. Jonesy looks into a string of assaults at the local racetrack. Alex and Matt disagree when Alex plans to let a businessman slide on a shoplifting charge and Matt wants to play things by the book. Matt continually maintains that the shoplifter is planning something bigger and even goes to the extent of investigating him on his day off. After his treatment, Tom is forced to accept help from good friends as he recovers from his operation.

Falcon-Price is still at Mount Thomas and, after realising the extent of Tom's bad health, orders him out on the road as Divisional Patrol Supervisor, seeing a chance to get rid of Tom by proving he is not fit for active duty. It looks as if this is true when Alex is stabbed by an escaped offender and it looks as if Tom is to blame. Falcon-Price convinces Alex to have Tom brought before the Medical Officer and, when Alex agrees, Falcon-Price uses this as ammunition to get Tom out of the force; but gets it blown up back in his face. Meanwhile, Jonesy and Amy are have difficulty finding their suspect and Kelly's jealousy is showing when she tries to find some negative information about Joss's new girlfriend.
