Live From My Den

Colombian-American singer Sebastian Yatra is the premiere artist on “Live From My Den,” a new weekly performance series from Artists Den and Variety.

Aloe Blacc introduces his new album “All Love Everything.” The episode also features live performances of songs from Blacc’s latest album, filmed at his favorite studio near his home in LA, which he calls his “home away from home.”

Features Glass Animals frontman Dave Bayley performing in his London home. We get a remarkable tour of his townhouse and studio from Bayley himself, who is clad in stylish beige overalls and does some ambitious camerawork with his iPhone, giving a very detailed inspection of his enviable home studio. Amid all sorts of memorabilia, bric-a-brac and geegaws, look out for indoor palm trees, a coffee-table book on toilet paper, a custom pair of Glass Animals-Denzel Curry nunchuks and a heating pad. He plays music, too! While he’s playing songs from the group’s third and most recent album, “Dreamland,” he gives an intimate and revealing look about the process behind the art — it’s probably the way a great many of the group’s songs were born.

Electronic music duo Phantogram, fresh off the release of their fourth album “Ceremony,” perform songs from their Los Angeles home studio Harmonie West. Hailing from the town of Greenwich in Upstate New York, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter take viewers on a tour of their Laurel Canyon, Calif., home, displaying the fan art and posters they’ve collected over the years, and providing an inside look at their creative process for their visually inspired “Ceremony.” Phantogram played “When I’m Small,” off of their first album “Eyelid Movies,” followed by a performance of a stripped-down rendition of their hit “Fall in Love” and “Bill Murray,” both off of the duo’s second studio album “Voices.”

Foster the People premieres songs from the band’s new EP, “In The Darkest of Nights, Let the Birds Sing” in the fifth and latest episode of “Live From My Den,” the Artists Den series presented with Variety. In a reflection of our lockdown times, the segment was filmed across five cities and three time zones in New York, Nashville, Austin, Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Diego. In the 33-minute segment, the group talks — transcontinentally! — about how the songs for the EP came together and what it’s like to try to be a working band sprawled across the country. The EP will be released on December 11.

Pink Sweat$ shared an intimate live performance of his song “At My Worst” from his recent “Prelude” EP in the sixth and latest episode of “Live From My Den,” the Artists Den series presented with Variety. The segment, also featuring the singer’s brother on the piano, was recorded in his L.A. home. In the 23-minute clip, Pink Sweat$, whose real name is David Bowden, talks about breaking into the R&B scene with his debut EP in 2018 and the inspiration behind his EP “The Prelude” that was released in July. The artist joined the conversation from his intimate workspace with pink walls, and took the audience through a quick tour, during which he showcased his recording equipment and drum set. The clip also features the singer’s performance of “Honesty,” “Lows” and “17.”

Singer-songwriter Girl in Red makes the most of her favorite interior space — giving the cameras a full tour of her bedroom-turned-home-studio in Oslo, Norway — but also heads out of town to the great outdoors to perform four of her most beloved songs from her grandmother’s farm.

Yola is all about taking a stand — hence the title of her just-released second album, “Stand for Myself” — but she also delivers quite a wallop even from a seated position. The formidable singer-songwriter is joined by her band for a slightly stripped-back, sit-down performance of four songs from the new Dan Auerbach-produced release. Yola also takes viewers on a tour of what she considers her own musical den: Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville.

Anderson East is definitely on the A-list — that is, the RCA Studio A in Nashville list — as he performs live from the historic facility on a new episode of “Live From My Den.” The singer-songwriter offers a tour of the studio, which has lately served as the den of his producer, Dave Cobb, and answers questions from viewers.

Feid is a long way from his native Medellin, Colombia, but the singer-songwriter has clearly made himself at home in Los Angeles in a new episode of “Live From My Den,” which has him performing songs from his most recent albums and discussing his career from a hotel overlooking the L.A. basin that, for now, is serving as his den. This episode sees Feid performing the favorites “Fumeteo,” “Corone,” “Chimbita,” “Porfa” and “Tengo Fe” with help from an acoustic guitarist and a cellist. Between numbers, he sits with Variety‘s executive editor of music, Shirley Halperin, for an interview and answers viewer-submitted questions.

Everyone’s path to becoming a musician is different, but Cautious Clay’s journey to his current status as an alt-R&B artist is unusual by any stretch.

Surrounded by vines and leafy set-pieces, the alternative Americana band Pinegrove play a stunning set of tracks from their environmentally-themed album 11:11 at Brooklyn’s Complete Music Studios. Filmed right before the band departs for their tour, the episode also captures the band discussing what it means to bring their most emotional material to a live audience and how 11:11 is, in some ways, their self-titled record.

Justin Quiles breezes through a reggaeton set for his episode of Live from My Den, amidst palm trees and the glow of the South Florida sun. His performance takes an acoustic approach, playing multi-platinum singles like “Loco,” and “Jeans” with guitar, keys, drums, and bass. The self-proclaimed foodie also spends some time in the kitchen, discussing the relationship between food and culture with a professional chef. The episode posits a special glimpse into the background of one of reggaeton’s fastest growing superstars.

Magdalena Bay performed in Los Angeles, clad in neon bodysuits that match their synthetic pop perfection. Fresh off their first ever headlining tour, the band plays selections from their debut album Mercurial World, and they discuss their appreciation for pop, the many inspirations that contribute to their retro-futuristic aesthetic, and the potential attractions of a Magdalena Bay-themed amusement park.

Nicole Atkins plays her set from her go-to creative space in Nashville – Sometimes Studios – backdropped by rays of sunshine. The singer-songwriter performs selections from her 2020 album Italian Ice and talks through how the artists and studio musicians like Britt Daniel of Spoon, Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers, and the famous Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section came to be featured on the album. The multi-hyphenate artist also tours her art gallery, cracking jokes as she shows off her colorful paintings. Atkins is a one-of-a-kind creative, and this episode displays all sides of her artistic output.

In the studio where she recorded her debut record, mxmtoon (aka Maia) plays songs from both her upcoming album rising and 2019’s The Masquerade. The indie pop superstar breaks down her pop songs to just her vocals and ukulele, displaying the true intimacy of her songwriting. The episode also features Maia grabbing lunch from Xi’an Famous Foods, a nostalgic spot for her family in New York. She talks to Variety about moving to New York and its influence on her writing process, how rising distinguishes itself from her debut, and coping with imposter syndrome in the music industry.

The East London native Kojey Radical returns to his home of Hoxton to perform for Live from My Den. In a walking tour of his beloved neighborhood, he shows off local landmarks like Hoxton Hall, which helped foster his artistic ambitions, his favorite spots to eat, and even the very block where he grew up. The episode features Kojey performing songs from his debut album Reason to Smile alongside singles from his earlier mixtapes. In his conversation with Variety, he reminiscences on bringing his mom to the studio for the final feature to complete the album. Kojey Radical’s vast creativity and rambunctious energy is infectious in this episode of Live from My Den.
